2/1/15 day 12: Ludwigsburg-Hoheneck, DE

I asked peter to wake me up at 930 for breakfast because my phone was gone and I had no alarm. I didn't get a good night sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night and remembered where my phone was probably hiding though. Couldn't sleep after that. Peter wrapped on the door and I walked down and met the guys for a modest spread. I was eager to get to the car and check the cajon bag to see if my phone was there. After breakfast, I walked over to the venue and brought the car back to the hotel. Huge sigh of relief to find my phone safe but cold in the cajon bag. I put it there before playing Peter's tune Beauty. I play cajon for that tune and I always put the phone in the pocket but this time I spaced and never grabbed it. Anyway, crisis averted.

Made the short one hr drive past snow covered fields and to Benningen. It looked the area had just received a recent dose of snow; the trees all had a fresh coat of the white stuff. It was a pretty drive, past hillside vineyards and small towns. Checked into the hotel and took a short walk about. Jeff and I grabbed lunch at a little Döner joint that totally blew my mind. So good. I tried the Lahmacun, which they also call Turkish Pizza but it's like a pizza with Döner meat and then wrapped into a sandwich. Holy cow. So good. I saved half for later, it was serious.

Got back to the apt and had my daily nap which was glorious. We rendez vous'd at 4 and headed towards Ludwigsburg. What we quickly found out was that are a number of Ludwigsburgs all with different town affiliations; like Mannhein-Seckenheim. We were in Ludwigsburg-Hoheneck. Which is a tiny tiny village on the river Neckar. We had an hour to kill before load in so we cruised to what we thought was Ludwigsburg, but it could've been something else entirely. Saw this huge palace and stopped for a photo.
Peter wanted in but no dice.

Arrived at the venue Altes Schulhaus (Old School House) in Ludwigsburg-Hoheneck at 5 and was greeted by Ottmar, Margit and Philip. The space was vibey and warm; huge wooden beams, wooden floor. Margit made us Flammkuchen while we sound checked and after dinner, we hung in the little green room shack out back where Peter read aloud from the first book of Game of Thrones.
Peter was into it, I think.

Or good friend and leader of the German fan club Sabine came all the way from München and brought friends. Great to see her. The crowd was very receptive and called us back for an encore. The sound system was small but effective for that space. It was really dialed in. We barely needed monitors which is always nice.

We chatted w Sabine and friends and made our way back to the hotel in Benningen at like 1130. Another really fun night. Stoked for tmrw and Baienfurt!!

1/30/15 day 11: Mannheim-Seckenheim, DE

Opted to skip breakfast this morning due to the late check out which might have been the wrong call because the guys said the spread was righteous. Oh well. A good sleep was needed.

Grabbed a pastry and a coffee at the corner cafe and met the guys at noon in the hotel lobby. We took a short walk down the street and checked out a huge baroque palace for about 20 minutes and then called it. Tiny snow flakes started to fall and temps were low. A little too low for a jean jacket. Nice crib though. I'd live there..
Hopped in the car and made the hour journey to a little town called Seckenheim between Heidelberg and Mannheim. Technically the town is connected to Mannheim, but it's it's own little town of 40k inhabitants. We found the hotel which is an old renovated barn. Very funky spot. I occupied the top floor in a small little apt. Birds nest, indeed.
Went on a hunt for some lunch. Basically everything shuts down in the afternoon. All stores are closed EXCEPT Döner joints, which is totally cool with us. Popped into a joint and had. A killin' sandwich. I didn't take a picture but that doesn't mean this meaty delight won't live in my memories. Fresh bread, chicken, veggies, feta cheese... Hammered it down.

Walked over to the venue at 4 and met our host and owner of the old renovated brewery Andreas. Andreas bought the building which houses a really nice restaurant, small theater stage, and the Keller where we played. He is an interesting cat. He owns and operates a family business with his wife and two sons and bought the building kind of on a lark. He is a lover of music tho, and quickly started booking shows and jam sessions in the Keller below the brewery. Sound check lasted like 30 minutes. We walked back to the hotel (5 min walk) got cleaned up and had a beer in the hotel bar before meeting Andreas in the restaurant at the venue for dinner.
Dinner was off the chain. I went big; salad to start, then Rumpsteak with Gorgonzola sauce and potatoes. It doesn't photograph well, but trust me... It was off the chain.
Yeah, that's pancetta on top. Sooooo good.

We hit at 8 to a sold out house. 120 beautiful Germans filled the space up and ate up all the acoustic jams. I feel like we took them on a ride tonight. Highlights were Dance with Me when we went into Black Water by the Doobie Brothers. Printemps and 1000 Little Pieces were fun crowd participation tunes. Sold merch and chatted folks up at the end of the night. Made some good contacts for future events, radio and print promotion. Hopeful we will come back to the area. We made some fans tonight.

Had a bit of a shock at the end of the night when I couldn't find my cell phone. When we play Peter's "Beauty that surrounds" I play Cajon and I forgot that I put the phone in the side pocket of the canjon "jacket." Anyway, went home without it, determined to come back to the venue the next day and find it only to wake up in the middle of the night and remember where I had put it. Needless to say I didn't have the most restful sleep.  Another good night in the books though. It's so fun introducing folks to this music. It's a hit over here.

1/29/15 day 10: Baden-Baden, DE

Woke up around 8 to the soothing sounds of a hammer, drill, and what I can only guess was a jack hammer... Germans... Always working... Take the morning off, for crying out loud. I pretended not to hear it or feel the shaking of the walls until about 930 but stubbornly stayed in bed until 10. We were out the door at 11. Rolled back to the car at the university parking garage, dropped off our gear and went out for one last stroll.

First order of business was coffee. We hit up a tiny little cafe right next to Martinstor. We popped into a couple stores and by about 1230 we were all ready to hit the road. We decided we should make one more quick stop at Uni Döner for a little snack; one more Döner for the road. It was worth it. Damn they know what they are doing. Peter and I decided to split a Yufka Döner which is the same thing just with a tortilla-like wrap instead of flat bread.

We made the one hr journey to Baden-Baden without incident. A dude can get spoiled by all these short drives.. We hit up our very nice hotel around 2 and I powered down hard. I went full room black out, eye mask, white noise. It was a dangerous move but I was willing to risk it. Up and out of the hotel by 4 and arrived a few minutes later at the venue, Rantastic, where we met Mauritz and Alex our sound and light team and Miriam our hospitality manager.  We loaded in and sound checked in under an hr and had 3.5 hrs to kill. So we did wht any rock and roll band from America would do... We got wild.
Our backstage antics are legendary.
The calm before the mellow acoustic storm. Rantastic, Baden-Baden, DE.

Had a nice dinner in the restaurant adjacent to the venue.. More like in the venue. This complex is huge; it houses tennis courts, restaurant, and music venue among other things.

We hit to a full house. It felt great. Sounded really amazing. Best sound so far for sure. Our set felt great. "On My Own" is feeling really nice. I thought Peter's jam "Beauty" was the best yet. We also dusted off "Here Comes The Sun" as an encore and it slayed. We had some good convos after the set. A young couple from Freiburg made the trip for the show and were totally jazzed. I love that! It was a great night. Great room. Great vibes.

1/28/15 day 9: Freiburg, DE

Today was the big day. The day of our showcase at the Kultur Börse; 20 minute set for talent buyers and agents. I was a little nervous, not in our ability to perform these songs, but like the car would brake down on the way there or I'd bust a string mid tune. Anyway, we headed out for breakfast at 10:30. Our spot is the Uni Cafe right next to a bunch of the university buildings. Had this little beauty:
Banana and Nutella crepe.

On the road by 11:30 to the big hall/auditorium where the Börse is happening. It's in a facility a little north of town. I could see the tall dorms of the Stusie where I lived in '97 off in the distance to the south.

We met with Tommy at his booth around 12 and coordinated with the sound guys. We were the first act so we were able to get in early and have a proper sound check which was HUGE. We got the room sounding juicey and had a minute to chill.

The set went by in a flash: Crumble, Moving in Slow Motion, Dance With Me, Love Song and then Bid You in the audience. Well recieved. Felt really good and sounded really good.

We checked out some of the other acts and then hung out at the booth for a bit and around 3 headed back to the apt for some lunch. Peter and I opted for Currywurst mit Fritten. Always a favorite. It's basically a white sausage lathered in curry sauce, paprika and grilled onions. So good.

Promptly went down for a nap after that. Rallied with the guys at 7. We walked around the corner to Martins Bräu which is a little brew pub by Martins Tor. It's cool. Not my favorite, more of a tourist spot, but split a pitcher of their Dunkel and rapped. Met Tommy back at the apt at 8 and we all went over to Feierling for dinner. Had a nice long sit down about the Nov tour and 2016 and had some good laughs. Tommy is good people and on top of his game. On the walk back to the apt, we passed Isle of Innesfree which is an Irish Pub right off Augustiner Platz. It was Karaoke night so we all decided we needed to check it out. Holy gut buster... We had a ball.

This is Peter doing a little Outkast and getting the crowd MOVING.

Too funny. Jeff rocked some Journey and Peter and I dueted on some Oasis. We were all rolling on the floor. Such a fun night.

Looking forward to the tour starting back up tho! It's time to get back to work.

1/27/15 day 8: Freiburg, DE

We hit breakfast at a little cafe by the Uni around 10:15. I got Flammkuchen which is a regional savory dish; most like a pizza but lighter. Definitely an aggressive order but I wasn't sure when I would get it otherwise so I went big.

Met Ray Austin, booking agent extraordinaire of Wodan Halle in town and musician, at Martinstor at 11am and walked over to his house just west of the new student library. Our task was to sing vocal harms to his song "Just the Blues." We crushed it. Obvi.

Afterwards, he took us out to lunch for Indian food and then coffee. We said goodbye and went back to the apt to clean up and head to the Messe where the Kultur Börse was taking place. We ran into Tommy first thing and got a lay of the land; where we r performing tmrw, some of the other acts, etc. The Messe is huge; loads of agents, acts, managers. Felt like a cross between NACA and burning man as Jeff described.

Just another freaky scene at the Börse.

Tommy, our agent, threw a party at his booth at 6 where we ran into a couple friends/booking agents we have worked with in the past. The area where his booth blew up; people everywhere. Beers flowing. Folks lighting up smokes. It was like all the rules were thrown out the window. We played a couple tunes acoustic before leaving back to town for dinner at 730.

Grabbed a Döner at Euphrats in town; my fave Döner joint and then dropped off the guitar at the apt on Fischerau Strasse. We met Tommy at Schlappen at 10:30 and had a drink and game planned before calling it a night. Chill night because we have a HUGE day tmrw; we showcase for the presenters. Totally stoked!!! We r gonna kill!!!

Night.

1/26/15 day 7: Freiburg, DE

Up at 845 for very modest breakfast. To be honest, I thought the hotel would have brought the heat a little bit more. It was extremely modest (I'm being generous).

We rolled out of there around 11:30 and headed south to Freiburg. The quickest route was through France, south from Saarbrücken. It was snowing heavy at times, so the going was slow until we hit Strasbourg. Discussion topic: if you could assemble a band with musicians living or dead, who would be in your band? Answeres varied greatly but mine featured Steve Gadd, Pino Palidino, Donald Fagen, John Mayer, Ben Harper, Derek Trucks, and me...

We hit Stasbourg and decided to turn off the navigation, go dark, and find a spot for lunch. You know...lunch in Strasbourg, NBD.

We followed our gut and ended up finding a parking place downtown and walked about 10 minutes and found this gem of a restaurant that would please everyone; Broc en Stock.

Off. The. Chain.
Salade Chèvre Chaud: salad with toasted goat cheese.
Steak au Poivre avec Frites: Steak w peppercorn cream sauce and fries. DAMN! I went full on glutonous and loved every minute of it.

Strasbourg scenes:
We were all stuffed and happy when we got back on the road at 3:15. It was snowing big fat snow flakes all the way to Freiburg. Peter crashed out in shotgun (highly illegal) and Jeff and I played "what one living band would you hire for a private performance." I chose Led Zepplin.

Rolled into Freiburg, one of my favorite spots on the planet and alma mater, at 4:20 and found Tommy our friend, booking agent, and event sponsor wandering parked outside our rented apartment. We are in Freiburg for a performance and to be a part of a conference to showcase for talent buyers. Tommy organized everything and we are all crashing in an apartment for the next couple days. Anyway, he went off to the conference to set up and I took Jeff and peter to Feierling, my favorite local brewery. PROST.

The nectar of the Gods for sure. We met tommy at 8 back at the apartment and we all went out for Moroccan food for dinner. It was, again, off the chain. Two amazing meals in one day. Grateful.

We stopped by Zum Schlappen, a bar from my youth, and enjoyed a single malt scotch and rapped with Tommy about the game plan for the next few days. We have some recording with our friend Ray on the agenda, as well as meet and greets, parties, performances.. Life is tough, folks. Life is really tough.

I am excited to be here, now. Not to let my mind wander too far from this very spot. To be in the moment. Enjoy the ride, this experience, these friends, this city. Savor. Hold tight. Let go.

Grateful.

1/25/15 day 6: Schweich, DE

Oh man. Slept clean through until my 9:10am wake up call. Had a nice little frühstuck w the cats and then hit the autobahn at 11.

Drove through Pfälzerwald which was very pretty; twisting roads, snow capped pine trees, little villages tucked into the nooks and crannies of the hills. Very picturesque, baby.

Made it to the hotel in a little over two hours. Dropped off the luggage and went on a small walkabout w Jeff while Peter grabbed a power nap. There is a little street festival today; carts selling fresh waffles, Glühwein, frikadelle sandwiches. Nice little scene.

Quick change at the hotel and then walked up the street to the venue; an old synagogue. Very vibey, great acoustics.

Pre-gig spread is on point.

Met our hosts Christoph and Judith and did a quick soundcheck. Walked back down to the hotel for dinner which was pretty righteous... I had chicken breast with feta and roasted tomatoes. Walked back up to the venue around 7 and warmed up in the green room. We hit around 730. Show was great. Nice crowd, very attentive, very appreciative. We had some nice chats after the, ahem, second encore. We sang Dance With Me in the lobby with a fan who is a young singer songwriter. Packed up our gear and walked back down to the hotel.

There was a short jam session in the hotel bar and then it was lights out. 3 hr drive tmrw to Freiburg. So stoked to get back to alma mater!

1/24/15 day 5: Remchingen, DE

Up at 6:45 which is not cool. I thought my body had recovered from the flight but I guess not. Breakfast in the restaurant was average. The guys came down around 9. We revised the set list and game planned for the day and then hit the road at 11. We heard that Schloß Lichtenstein located 15 min south of Pfullingen was worth a visit and by the pics online it is, but it's closed in January. We decided to just head north and hope we can check into our hotel rooms early.

Another beautifully short drive towards Karlsruhe today. Found the hotel, loaded in, had a coffee in the restaurant and reconvened at 2 for our photo shoot.

Our Slovakian friend/booking agent Olga set up a photo shoot for us w her friend Viera who met us at the hotel at 2. We discussed the game plan over coffee and then headed out to find the right location which we found about 20 minutes down the road at a neighboring town. It was cold by this point, like, more-than-a-jean-jacket-is-needed cold. We got the picks quick though right as it began to snow. Hoped in the car, cranked the heat, and cruised directly to the venue Löwensaal at 430. Load in and sound check were done by 530. We went next door for Greek food and got back to the venue around 7. I was struggling at this point. I was already sleepy and then I had a serious food coma. No nap and no lunch?! Unheard of.

We hit the green room and ran some of the newer tunes and did some vocal warm ups. Took the elevator down to the stage and hit at 8 to a packed room (80 beautiful German folks). So nice to work with an amazing sound system! Sets went great. We substituted "Memories" for "Worth The fight" and did "on my own" again. Felt good. Crowd dug it.

Afterwards we chilled at the merch table and rapped w our new friends. I'm still in awe how well this music is received here. This crowd gets this music and I am reminded of it every night.

They sent us home with food and beverage which we busted out at the band meeting in my room after the gig. We were home by 11 and I was in bed, exhausted and happy, at 12. Another great room, night, audience, dinner, performance.

1/23/15 day 4: Pfullingen, DE

Up at 830 for breakfast and was eventually joined by Peter and then Jeff. Me first at breakfast doesn't happen often so I quietly enjoyed my coffee and typical German breakfast goods in silence.

Out the door at 11. Drove for an hour and arrived in Pfullingen and pulled into the venue, restaurant, hotel Klostergarten. Love the short drives. And love Germany under snow. Very picturesque drive.

We could tell as soon as we walked in that dinner was going to be well above average. The building used to house a brewery so beautiful hand hewn beams and big windows, hard wood floors, etc. Beautiful space. We checked into our rooms and headed off towards town to find some lunch. You won't believe what we found.

This one was good; lamb, cabbage, lettuce, onion, yogurt sauce, red pepper flakes, tomato, in a fresh baked flat bread. Killing.

Town was quiet. Saw a couple folks on the street otherwise it was pretty deserted. After lunch I embarked on a power nap to end all power naps. Woke up with a start at 530. Met downstairs at 6 to help organize the PA and sound check. The venue Gewoelbekeller is below the restaurant. The old ice storage cellar for the beer. Really nice stage, lights and sound. Very comfy vibes. After sound check we enjoyed an amazing dinner. I got the schnitzel with the spätzle. So so good.

We hit at 830 and did two sets. Felt good. Crowd was totally in. Lots of stand outs; Crumble, On My Own, 1000 Little Pieces. On My Own was performed for the first time tonight! Felt great to drop some new material.

After the set we rapped with folks and eventually the acoustic guitar was busted out by Peter and a short jam session ensued. A bunch of folks promised to show up in Herrenberg on the 7th which is another great venue. Tour is off to a great start. Excited about it!

1/22/15 day 3: Stuttgart-Feuerbach, DE

Proper night sleep sways reinvigorates the soul! Slept pretty clean through to my alarm at 8am. I was afraid I'd be wide awake at 6 but no, had a great night sleep and was walking to breakfast by 830 where Peter and Jeff were already powering through their classic German breakfast.

Pretty solid spread this morning; brötchen, sliced meats, cheeses, yogurts, muesli, fresh fruit, juice, coffee. We put a real hurtin' on the buffet and rallied for rehearsal in Peter's room (he somehow managed to get the penthouse suite) at 10.

Rehearsal until 12. We ran down the old stuff and polished up some newer cuts including On My Own which will be appearing on the new tSR album. It's sounding good! Peter is using a ukulele bass which is sounding pretty cool.

Hopped the U6 from Wilhelm Geiger Platz to Schloßplatz and walked around. Peter and I opted for Thai food while Jeff took down a falafel, which he counted as one of the best so far.

Headed back to Feuerbach around 3 and we decided to pop into a random hotel w wifi for a minute. Wifi is an elusive lover these days. On some level it's nice to unplug, but you know, sometimes u wanna drop some pics to Instagram... Anyway, sorry if I haven't emailed or texted u back... It's not because I'm ignoring u.

Crushed a short little 35 min nap before rallying the two blocks to the venue at 5. So, the whole concept of "Besenwirtschaft" (the name of the club is Besenwirtschaft Krug after Jürgen Krug the owner) has an old tradition. From what I pieced together from folks throughout the night (some with thick Schwäbisch accents like Jürgen) around the time of the wine harvest, the city would grant temporary liquor licenses (4 months) to people who made their own wine. The idea was that these folks would clean out their living rooms and create little neighborhood wine bars offering their homemade wines and local foods and host cultural evenings with music and theater. Super cool tradition. During the time of the liquor license, the hosts would hang a broom or "Besen" at the front of the house to signify the place was cleaned and ready for business.

Our new friend Jürgen has been doing this for 36 years and up until 3 years ago, he was making his own wine as well. These are professional house concerts with homemade food and wine. It was awesome. 70 folks, young and old packed onto benches and ate and drank and laughed and clapped and just plain got down. It was rad.

There are also always two performances, one music, one theater, and you alternate sets. The theater portion of last night was this man and woman team who performed this comedic love story with thick regional Schwäbisch accents. I caught about 60% of what they said. It's like hearing a comedy act from someone from the deep South, you'd get the gist, but you wouldn't catch all the words. The crowd was rolling though. Our set went great I thought. Great first outing and the crowd dug it.

Our hosts Karin and Jürgen. In every other picture Jürgen is doing bunny ears and Karin kept trying to take a picture of the woman taking a picture; a couple of real jokers...

1/21/15 day 2: Stuttgart, DE

Arrived in Schiphol at like 830am. Ran into Peter and Jeff right after customs and we headed over to the gate. I stopped off into a cafe right by the gate and had my first cappuccino which disappeared in moments. Hopped on a little "city hopper" KLM flight to Stuttgart which took all of an hour. Barely had enough time to finish my second coffee of the day and my first biscuit with caramel.

The plane broke through the cloud cover and we all caught our first glimpse of Germany; rolling hills and snug residential areas all dusted with snow. It's been ages since I've been in Germany in the winter and it has a very different vibe.  I dig it.

Grabbed our bags in the eerily quiet Stuttgart airport and picked up the keys to our tour whip; 2015 black VW Touran. No shit this thing had 10km on the odometer. Even the steering wheel leather felt nice. She has already been dubbed "Tender Betty" by the other beardo and the weirdo.

40 minutes later we arrive in Stuttgart-Feuerbach which is a small village within Stuttgart city limits. We parked the car at the venue and went on a walk about for food and fresh air; we had an hour to kill before we were supposed to meet Jürgen and Karin at the club. We followed the street down into the little center of town which had a bakery and a hair salon on every block. Apparently these folks love sweet hairdos and warm baked goods... Maybe both at the same time? Up in the mountains around Stuttgart there was snow in the trees and while the snow was already gone in Feuerbach, it was still pretty darn cold. Glad I packed some cold weather gear.  I'm gonna need it...

We hit the first Döner joint we came across. A couple restaurants were closed for siesta which made the streets look really deserted. No matter, we found what we'd all been waiting for: BEHOLD.

We all agreed it wasn't the best we've ever had but it still hit the spot. The bread was like a crispy English muffin. The meat was a little dry and it could've used more sauce and/or heat. We were just stoked to be in a warm restaurant and stuffing shaved meat in our food holes.

Walked off lunch and then headed back to the venue where we met Jürgen and Karin the couple that run the club. Reminded me of a cross between the club in Parchim we played back in 2009 and Sancho's venue in Walksfelde. They are both super nice and Jürgen even has a touch of the muppets in him.... Those two cats that sit in the balcony, know which ones I mean? Anyway they broke down the schedule for the show tmrw and sent us off to the hotel with a couple bottles of wine and some bottled water.

It took all my might not to press the old lids together and sneak a nap before rehearsal but I powered through and we got about an hour into running tunes when I hit the wall around 430pm. I shuffled back to my room and went full horizontal, under the covers, eye mask, sound machine, power nap... It would've been all over had I not received a phone call from Tommy our booking agent about our first gig tmrw. Woke up, showered, and rallied and we hit the mean streets of Stuttgart... Actually, they were really clean, well organized, and well lit... But that's Germany for ya.

I haven't spent a lot of time in Stuttgart at all. Seems like a pretty cool town Id like to get to know. We took the U Bahn to Schloßplatz in the heart of town and started a walk about. Somehow it felt warmer outside this evening than it did today. We walked the pedestrian shopping zone and then stumbled on a little joint for food and our first beer of the tour! Prost.

After our meal at Schräglage we continued walking around some more and ended up at Cafe Weiss, an "old school institution" as one bartender called it. It was small, smokey and a bit of a time warp but super chill and vibey. They handed out small plates of spicey crackers (affectionately named "spicey Dragons" by us) with a lone gummi bear on top... It felt like a locals bar which is always preferred. We did well tonight; saw some of the city, got some fresh air and stretched our legs out and sampled some delicious local treats. We caught the U6 back to our stop (Wilhelm Geiger Platz, 15 minutes away) and made the short walk up the hill to our hotel.

Tmrw the tour begins.

1/20/15 day 1: phx>det>ams>stu

Up and at 'em at about 7:45 this morning. Up before the alarm even. Another beautiful day in PHX. Had a quick and delicious southwest inspired breakfast at Cafe downtown; egg scramble w chorizo and hot peppers. Figured it's bread and cheese from here on out so might as well blow it out one last time. Even had a taste of a jabanero latte concoction. Delicious.

Flights were painless for the most part; phoenix to Detroit, Detroit to Amsterdam. Slept a total of about 1.5 hrs. Watched November Man and about 30 minutes of a Japanese Kung fu movie and Hercules, tossed and turned, and BLAM, we arrived and it's Wednesday.

Spotted Jeff "international face station" Vallone in the passport line in Schiphol. Met the remaining third of the trio, Peter "Party Schnitzel" Day on the other side of the check point. The "Two Beardos & One Werido Tour" is underway!
