5/3/12 day 8: Sorrento, Italy

2300 hrs:
What a great day. The weather was amazing and I had the afternoon off to go check out Sorrento. After lunch, my new friend and colleague Chris from Manchester (he works in the jewelry shop and is a Man U fan) took the tender to the port and walked up the steps to city. Sorrento is perched on a sheer cliff wall and is this really quaint little town. First stop was gelato.... Real Italian gelato. I had ricotta and pear flavored. It was unreal. Picture a beautiful sunny day, little cobblestoned alleys with every variety of shops, lemon groves, and vespas as far as the eye can see. Some of the shops were the typical tourist junk; magnets, trinkets, "I love Italia" t-shirts. But there were also fruit vendors and leather shops and clothing shops. At one of the fruit vendors i picked up these bags of herbs and dried veggies that you basically create a pasta sauce with by adding a little water and oil. You then add that to your pasta. Some have olives and garlic, others mushroom and basil. They look amazing. Can't wait to get home to try them. Took a ton of pics and then we headed back to the ship around 4 which is my unofficial siesta time. I then did my first four set night of the cruise. It went down smooth and easy. At the end of this cruise, I am gonna laugh at playing four sets of music. "Childs play!" I'll say.

Tomorrow we dock at Civitavecchia outside Rome. Already got plans to take a train to Rome tomorrow AM with some other crew members. Haven't been to Rome since the Clinton administration.

Tomorrow we also get a boat load (literally) of new passengers. The charter is over, the real work begins, and we start to make our way to Scandinavia. Italy was a nice surprise addition to the itinerary. Ciao.

Pics: Capris island, the cliffs, lemon groves, the ship with Mt Vesuvius, new friends, birra, the ship.
