4/28/13 day 27: Fribourg>Copenhagen

Up at 7:45 to pack, catch breakfast and get to the Stuttgart airport. No time to even take any pics of the city. It was rainy, foggy and cold as we threw our things in the car. Without Peters stuff, we didn't have to Tetris the thing like we had been doing. With three people, luggage and instruments, there wasn't much more you could have fit in that rental car, or the "five star edition" as it came to be called. It was a trusty stead though and it got Jeff and I to Stuttgart in 4 hours. Peter was probably sleeping soundly as he was taking a train to Geneva to visit friends for a few days. We said our goodbyes the night before but we felt his spirit in the car as he left a mess of cookie crumbs and trash in the front seat... Just kidding, baby! We love u brother!

Once I dropped off Jeff, returned the rental car, and checked in, I had four hours before my flight so I spent some quality time with book three of Game of Thrones. Exciting stuff!! Don't worry, no spoilers.

Flight to COP was easy. Was concerned that Lufthansa was going to charge me an extra seat for my guitar... the woman at the self check-in kiosk intoned as much but the ticket clerk made no mention of it and even put me in an emergency aisle... must be a player himself. Free shuttle to airport hotel for one last night in Copenhagen was super easy.

Made a quick trip to the nearest Döner spot for dinner (thinking this will be the last for at least a year) and brought it back to the hotel to go over all the numbers from the tour and chill. No crazy last night in europe. No train trips into downtown... Quiet. Reflection. Game planning.

It seems as though the tour ends much as it started; flying solo here in Copenhagen. Although, there have been some huge changes in my life since I left. I am a little overwhelmed with how to approach them at the moment and while I would love to be 'present' I catch myself consumed in the "what's to come." And although I am so proud of peter, Jeff and myself for all the hard work (and heaven forbid the fun and camaraderie) melting the minds of numerous european music fans the past two weeks, I return to Phoenix with an extremely heavy heart. Highs and lows like no other...

I am grateful for Peter and Jeff, my brothers in musical arms, without whom this tour would not have happened. I am grateful for all of our amazing hosts and venue workers who welcomed us and treated us with respect. I am grateful to all the music lovers who sat attentively at our shows, applauded and sang passionately, and supported monetarily. I am grateful for a renewed faith in my art and in the power of music to bring people together. I am grateful to my friends and family who continue to lend support and love and check in to see how things are going. I am grateful for so much. But there are always two sides. And I guess for every fulfilling and satisfying experience, there is an opposite experience of equal value. Maybe it's to keep you humble and modest. Maybe it's to remind you life and relationships are fragile...

See you soon Phoenix.

4/27/13 day 26: Freiburg>Fribourg

Peeled out of bed at 9 to catch the tail end of breakfast at the hotel. The weather outside looked gloomy; rain was misting down and light grey clouds covered the top of Schlossberg where just yesterday we sat in T-shirts and looked out over this great and cozy city. The weather is fickle. Not sure if its ready for Spring. Ray told us last night that the rain helped attendance at the show. He feared a beautiful night would force everyone outside. Apparently, the people HAVE decided what they want; spring, sunshine, warm. Good for us though.

We asked for a late check out to take advantage of our last hours in Germany. I broke out towards downtown over slick cobblestone streets and quiet passageways. I was looking for nothing in particular; maybe something to bring home for loved ones. Maybe something for my family. I ended up enjoying a fresh squeezed juice (celery, carrot, apple) which reminded me of mornings in Phoenix with Kim. I turned up my collar and stepped back out onto the street looking for nothing in particular.

We hit the road about 12. It was a pretty painless two hour drive south, except for the 40 Swiss franc toll we had to pay... Ouch. Thanks Switzerland!

Checked into hotel, sound check, all done by 5:30. Had time to go back to hotel and get some rest before the show. Had no energy to explore. Was feeling a bit zapped overall and decided it would be for everyone's benefit to lay low. We had our last supper at an Italian joint next door.

The venue was very cool; comfy couches, nice bar, cool lighting... We played two sets to a rambunctious crowd. It was a fun way to end the tour. I was super excited to see my friend Marla Moffa show up with her roommate. They came all the way from Milano, Italy! We had a mini-1994 south Hadley high school reunion and we all hung out and caught up after the set.

We said goodbye to Peter tonight as he is gonna spend a couple days in Geneva before he goes home. Jeff and I are to be on the road by 8:40 headed to Stuttgart, Germany to catch flights.

Can't wait to spend some time on my post-tour wrap up tomorrow. Nacht, leute.

4/26/13 day 25: Freiburg, Germany

Left Solothorn around 11 after a very respectable breakfast. We arrived without international incident in Germany around 12:45. The rooms weren't ready yet, so we parked the car at the hotel and struck off towards downtown.

It felt really good to be back. Last time I was here was maybe 10 years ago. We walked west through Schwabentor and into the painfully quaint downtown. I took them directly to Feierling Brewery for a taste of my favorite brew. This small batch brewery makes three styles all year round: a dark in the fall and a Bock in the winter. Throughout the year, they have the main style which is an "export" style lager that is unfiltered and delicious! After that, I took them to my favorite spot for Turkish food, Euphrat. It was like I was 21 again!!

I took them on a quick walk around to the Rathaus and the Dom and then we went up the biergarten up on the hill overlooking the city. The weather was overcast but warm enough to sit outside and take in the view. It started to sprinkle as we made our way back to the hotel. I was happy for a quick power nap before Ray picked us up and brought us over to the club. Ray is a seasoned, jolly old chap from the UK. He runs the club. Drives like a masshole, which I can thoroughly appreciate being from Massachusetts.

The room is lovely. It used to be an old municipal garbage truck repair shop. It sounds amazing though and the vibe is already tangible.

Had a quick Käsewurst with a brötchen before the set which was delicious. Although, peter was hankering for sauerkraut. Gonna try to make that happen tomorrow.

The set was solid. We had 60+ people, thanks in large part to Ray's PR in the local papers and motivating his email list. The vibe was great. The stories flowed. Song highlights were "Moving in Slow Motion" "Miss You Now" and "1000 Little Pieces." The new tunes are really coming together with peter and Jeff laying down some really solid harmonies. They sound great and fit nicely into the set as previews of the next tsr record.

Also had a double encore tonight so we dropped Been Too Good and I did a solo version of Here Comes the Sun. All to great response.

We also officially sold out of CDs! We estimate we sold 175 CDs total which is really great for 10 shows. While we are bummed we won't have any for our last show, we are stoked how many we sold throughout the tour. I didn't think it was possible but we did it. Very proud.

Gonna be tough to leave Freiburg tomorrow, but excited for our last show.

Gute Nacht alle.

4/25/13 day 24: Solothorn, Switzerland

Beautiful clear blue sky this morning. Breakfast outside on the patio of the Best Western. We hit the road at 11. It was a beautiful drive today. We started out in vineyards with the Alps off in the distance. We took the 30 minute ferry from Meersburg to Konstanz. Passed over the border to Switzerland after a few quick questions by a border patrolman, and made it to Solothorn by three. Had time for a quick power nap before arriving at the club at 4:30 for sound check. Sound check was efficient and sterile (it was a very Swiss sound check). All done by 5:30. We had a little time to wander.

I must say, this town is very charming. It feels like a little fairy tale city. Cut in two by a swift flowing green river, Solothurn
sits at the foot of a little mountain range. I say 'small' only because the alps are on the other side of town.

We wandered over cobblestone streets that rose slowly towards to the mountains behind the city. This city must be what the rest of Western Europe looked before WWII. It feels like a proper summer day so the streets were alive with young people drinking on the banks of the river, shoppers shopping, people drinking coffee, enjoying the last slices of sunshine.

The venue is right on the water in what appears to be an old cellar of sorts. Very cozy. Outside along that banks opposite all the happenings is a quiet restaurant. It was here where we too enjoyed the sun and toasted our good fortune.

The show went great! Capacity crowd of about 50 in the room. Folks were extremely psyched and respectful. We had the whole crowd singing "Oh La La" in Printemps. It was epic!! We officially sold out of "Laurel & Sunset" tonight and are down to our last 15 "North & Prospect!" I feel really good about the performance. We keep getting better and better and the new tunes are developing nicely!

Goodnight from Switzerland, world.

4/24/13 day 23: Baienfort, Germany

Another long drive today... After taking the morning to do laundry and walk around the city, we hit the road around noon. Marburg is definitely a place I will come back to. So beautiful.

Arrived in Baienfort around 5:30. We hit some traffic around Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Ulm but otherwise made good time. We pass the time w the ipod and Danish language lessons. I can tell you in Danish that "i am american" "where is HC Anderson boulevard?" and "i would like something to eat."

We were deep in farm country when we came upon Hof Theater. Hof Theater is an old barn converted into a music/performance venue. The vibe was tangible as soon as we rolled up. Tommy, our host and one of the owners of the establishment, greeted us when we arrived. He showed us around the property and then invited us to dinner at the restaurant attached to the venue. The menu was full of local flavors and southwest specialties. Talk about farm to table... the distance between the two is about 20 yards. Dinner was off the charts (Beef Bourguignon) as well the local beer (Landzüngle). It was tough to tear us away from the beer garden when it was time to get ready but we reluctantly made our way to the green room to warm up our voices and go over the set list just as the sun was setting over the hills. It was a stunning exit.

The show was one of our best; bilingual stories flowed, performance was on point, and crowd participation and appreciation was at a high level. It felt amazing, relaxed, elated... Two encores!? Unprecedented... We rolled out "Been Too Good" and I did a solo version of "Here Comes The Sun."

At the end of the show, Chef Chris shared w us a bottle of his home made, original recipe hazelnut schnapps that tastes like liquid Nutella. If there is any left at the end of the tour, we are going to split it up into three smaller bottles and bring it home. If u are lucky, I'll share it with u...

It's gonna be tough to top tonight, but there are still three shows!! Spirits are high. Gute Nacht leute!

The pic L to R is chef Chris, server, Uli (one of the owners), chef's mom, Peter, Jeff, Tommy, and chef's dad. Good crew!

4/23/13 day 22: Marburg, Germany

It was a long drive to Marburg today; about 5 hours. It was easy to tell that Marburg was a cool city. The autobahn followed the valley to our exit. We passed university buildings and a couple live music venues. We knew immediately that this town knew what was up! Marburg also has an understated "middle ages" element. The "ober stadt" surrounds the castle and the old cathedral. It was such a shame that we didn't have enough time to check out the city. After sound check was dinner, and then show time was at 8:15.

We played a great set, had a great turn out, and the atmosphere was perfect. Couldn't have asked for much more.

We crashed at Christian's apartment. Christian and Steffan run the music program at the venue. Back at Christians apartment that looked upon the castle, we listened to music and talked culture, politics, and life. A great hang...

I will come back to Marburg. A great night of music! Can't wait to check out this city.

4/22/13 day 21: Neuruppin, Germany

Up and out of the hotel at 11 today. Our plan was to drive to Berlin, park by the main train station downtown, and from there walk over to the Reichstag and pick up a hop-on-hop-off tour bus. The weather was nice; partly cloudy but sunny for the most part. We sat up on the upper deck of the open air bus and took it all in. We went all over town, which was money well spent. There is so much to see in Berlin I wasn't up for being the tour guide. This was the best solution. Started at the Reichstag, past Siegessäule, KaDeWe, past Check Point Charlie, over to Alexanderplatz for Currywurst and Pommes (rot/Weiss of course), Museen Insel, Unter den Linden to Brandenburger Tor and the monument for the victims of the Holocaust. Of course, there was much to see in between, but we got a good sense of former East Berlin as well as a lot of the big touristy spots in West Berlin. We finished the day with a beer on the banks for the river Spree. We were back at the hotel in Neuruppin by about 8 and back in the spa for more sauna and steam room. Great day. Long day.

We sat on the balcony of Jeff's room at the very end and ate our sandwiches overlooking the See. By then it was dark and chilly, so we didn't last too long. Went to bed partly mourning the fact that tmrw we had to move on to Marburg, the other part glad to have a full week of music planned. Tomorrow is the longest drive of the tour; 5 hours. Gute Nacht!

4/21/13 day 20: Radeburg>Neuruppin

Had a quick breakfast in our hotel in Radeburg and made our way back to Neuruppin where we played the night before. Standard breakfast on the road by the way is yogurt with musli, bread with some cheese, soft boiled egg, and strong black coffee. Anyway, we were in somewhat of a hurry to get back because, well, we wanted a spa day. Don't judge. The hotel in Neuruppin (Seehotel Fontane) is putting us up for the next two days. Attached to the hotel is a spa complete w 4 different saunas, various steam rooms, wading pools, heated outdoor swimming pools... It's all free to hotel guests too, so we wanted a whole day to check it all out. It was righteous. And hilarious. Lets just say the Germans are more comfortable in their birthday suits...

We decided to venture into town to find some dinner around 630 and decided on a small Italian joint.

We are all feeling super relaxed and well fed and I think I'm going to call it an early night. I haven't read my book in a while (nerd alert!) and we have plans to head into Berlin tomorrow for some site seeing. Gonna rest up. Gute Nacht!

4/20/13 day 19: Neuruppin>Radeburg

I awoke to the sound of a snare drum... I thought someone was sound checking in the courtyard at 9am. Turns out it was a cox-wane beating out a rhythm for the rowers on a slim boat going back and forth across the lake. Not the best way to woken up, let me tell you. All was forgotten by breakfast. The weather was crisp and cloudy, but nice enough when sitting in the sun. Nice enough to sit outside for breakfast.

We left Neuruppin at 1 and made our way to Radeburg. The GPS took us basically through Berlin which was odd, but we made good time. We checked into the hotel, dropped our stuff in our rooms and drove to the venue at 6.

The venue is an old train station. Super cool. Amazing acoustics. They set up the stage in the middle of the room (a la Canal Room) so folks were seated all around us. We had an amazing turnout, the vibe was righteous, and we nailed our performance. It was a great night. Made some great friends and shared a bunch of the new record. Couldn't ask for much more. We will definitely be back at this venue. Night y'all.

4/19/13 day 18: Kadan>Neuruppin, Germany

Four and a half hours in the car today. Probably the longest drive of the tour but it was worth it. Seehotel Fontane is always a nice place to end up. And even better when u find out at check-in that you've been upgraded to the corner suite. After enjoying the complimentary fresh, exotic fruit cocktail in my room, I partook in a 30 minute nap to refresh before dinner in the main restaurant.

The show went really well. We had a great crowd including fans who drove from Hamburg (2 hrs away) and Berlin (45 mins) to see the show. Encore was an a cappella "Bid You Goodnight." Already looking forward to our two days off here next week!

Finally getting all the information about the events in Boston too. Terrible, senseless stuff. So glad it seems to be over. Well done Boston.

4/18/13 day 17: Nürnberg>Kadan

Up at 9 to hit the last hour of breakfast at Hotel Gerhard. Filled up on yogurt and musli, bread and cheese and coffee. Even made a little sandwich for the ride.

We hit the road about 11. First stop was the Warwick Factory in Markneukirchen. Once we realized the factory was on the way to Kadan we built the stop into the schedule. We had a private tour of the facility which started with their huge selection of woods from around the world. Warwick is known for making some of the best bass guitars in the world. Our tour guide then brought us through the production facility. It was fascinating. Never seen a guitar production facility before. Jeff and Peter were in heaven.

After that, we struck off into the Czech backwoods and dropped into Kadan which is just like I remember it. The weather was beautiful when we arrived; sunny and warm, but soon changed to thunder and lightning and a down pour.

We checked into the 'penthouse' apartment after sound check (complete w an upright piano) and made it back to the venue in the rain with minutes to spare. The gig went great. Really surprising turnout too; we had close to 30 very attentive and appreciative czechs in the house. We even had spontaneous translators translating the stories between songs. It was a lot of fun. Had fun chatting w folks after the gig and enjoyed a killer Czech meal of pork chops, red cabbage, sour kraut, and two different kinds of dumplings. I'm glad we are after the set!

The venue is really cool too. We play in the basement which was formally a beer cellar. Newly remodeled with exposed brick and vaulted ceiling.

They want us to come back next Summer and play the outdoor amphitheater. I could be convinced...

4/17/13 day 16: Nürnberg, Germany

Grabbed breakfast at 9:30 this morning. The spread was pretty good... Standard German fare... Brötchen, sliced meats and cheeses, yogurt, musli, coffee, soft boiled eggs.

We met back at the lobby at 11:00 and walked to the Documentation Zentrum which is a really thorough and well done World War II museum housed in the unfinished 'Kongress' building. I didn't realize how much history took place in this city and how many NSPD events occurred here. It was a somber yet informative morning as we walked through the building and grounds where many of these events occurred.

On the walk back to the hotel at about 3 PM, we stopped for a 'Döner' and a beer. It's perfect afternoon nap food. We had decided to meet back at the lobby at 4:45 to head into the 'alt stadt' for the evening. We took the U Bahn from Frankenstrasse to the Hauptbahnhof and walked north through the winding, cobblestone streets. I couldn't get over how picturesque it was. I'd never seen a medieval German city like this before. We wound our way through the pedestrian areas towards the castle. As the sun set, we peered over the castle walls and took in the great view. We could even see the Kongress building from earlier in the day.

We picked a little Italian restaurant on the river to rest and rejuvenate. We then made our way to the Rote Bar (which was recommended by the sound guy last night) and had a cocktail and toasted our good fortune.

This is definitely a place I want to check out again.

Gute Nacht.
