5/4/12 day 9: Rome, Italy

1730:
At some point this morning, we docked at Civitavecchia, Italy. We met up in the mess hall at 9: two Irish dancers Steph and Rob, the Scottish stage manager Liam, Chris from Manchester, and me. We had about a 15 minute walk to the train station and hopped the next train to Rome. It was about a 55 minute train ride that dropped us off right next to St. Peters cathedral. We knew we had to get the 230 train back to the ship, so we basically began a lightning speed walking tour of some of the big sites: Tivoli Fountain, Colliseum, St. Peters Cathedral, Pantheon, and a bunch of other two thousand year old ruins, churches, and countless statues. It was a whirlwind tour but still managed to make some time for gelato and a Peroni. Made it back to the ship which had in the meantime refilled with "regular" passengers. Tonight we continue northward to Portovenere. Got a light night of work tonight. This past week was a good warm up for me, now I am ready for the work to begin!

Today new staff and crew came on board as well. A bunch of folks were hugging and getting caught up; old friends from past cruises. No one seems to be as wide eyed as I was when I got on board!

Yesterday was my one week anniversary of boarding the ship. Time is flying by!
